i obviously didn't invent the term "neo-jazz," but it seems to apply in a new, neo-way, to a number of new artists and performers, whose vibe, identity, and compositional styles reflect a classic jazz sensibility, along with modern phrasing, black and white images, and hipster attitude. i don't mean girls singing like bessie smith, but a whole new time-bending genre.
my featured neo-jazz artists this week include the swedish duo koop, turkish kirpi, and austrian parov stelar (pictured). the sound is new but familiar, old and weirdly timeless.
you'll swear you've heard some of these songs before you were born...or in an afterlife...
the songs are here.
