Indian Hills Basketball
Though our new show may be named Practically Worthless Sports, there is nothing worthless about the crew of players just down the road in Ottumwa. All these Saturday and weeknights when you were wondering what to do you could have been over supporting what is now the ONLY undefeated junior college in the nation. Indian Hills.
These guys are amazing. And in fact they are ranked #1 in the nation. Yep, right over in Ottumwa, #1 in the nation...(and I bet you didn't even know cause the Ledger only covers "local" sports and Ottumwa is too far away...30 miles...to be local...it's true, I asked them and that's what they said.) Go figure.
But of course it all comes down the the playoffs which start next week. And their big final game is against tough Iowa Western on Western's home court at 7:30 PM Saturday.
There are probably 4 kids on the team who will go to Division 1 schools next year - well, OK, at least one. Maybe 4.
Listen saturday night at 7:30 pm at kmgo 98.7 fm, or on the web at www.kmgo.com. And check out Hills' team and upcoming playoff schedule at http://www.ihcc.cc.ia.us/ihcc/Athletics/basketball/basketball.asp
Many thanks for the favorable feedback for Practically Worthless Sports, the Sunday morning show hosted by me and my pal Greg Polakow.
Anyway, in case you share the widely held opinion that softball is some fluffy little affair I suggest you make your way over to Indian Hills Wednesday at 3 PM.
There you will observe a doubleheader by two of the top junior college softball teams...and not just in Iowa.
Hills features two dynamite pitchers that are anything but fluff. First there is Sonja Schwenker, the fireballing lefty who slaps her leg as she delivers a pitch - making a frightening, bullwhip-like sound. She has only lost one game all year.
Then there's Allysa Fligg from Agency who pitched Cardinal Eldon to two state titles a few years back. She features a knee buckling change-up and has already received a scholarship to the University of Nebraska for her final two years. Oh yeah, she pitched 32 innings last weekend and won 3 games - that's right, 32 innings in 2 days. (Uhhh, last time I checked you don't see boys pitch 32 innings in a weekend.)
Indian Hills' opponent on Wednesday is arch rival Southeastern Community College in Burlington. You're gonna have your eyes opened by these teams, so call in sick, or better yet tell your boss you have something more important to do, or maybe best of all simply invite your boss along.
I'll see you at Indian Hills Community College Wednesday at 3 PM. The diamond is on campus and easy to find.
