jeff harris

Heads up KRUU listeners, tonight at 12 midnight, special guest Jeff Harris is going to be manipulating the airwaves and your eardrums with his minimal vinyl set. Why is this historic? Jeff Harris was at the helm when KRUU sent out our first ever signals after constructing our tower over two years ago. Check out this link for a little flashback set of pictures. Thanks once again to Dwight Harris for donating the tower sections, his expertise, and his time to raise the tower. Without Dwight, no KRUU.

University of Iowa writing teacher Cheryl Fusco Johnson will join co-host Caroline Kilbourn to delve into Ms. Goldberg’s latest book, “Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of Writing Memoir.” Cheryl says “If this book doesn’t get you writing, nothing will.”

The interview will be rebroadcast Monday at 8 am.

rogue waveAfter launching this week's show with European electronic group, Cargo Cult, DJ Andy Bargerstock introduces Fairfield to Oakland Indie band, Rogue Wave (photo), formerly with Subpop Records and now recording with Brushfire Records under the leadership of guitarist, Zach Schwartz. You will hear three tracks from three CDs: "California," "Endgame" and "Chicago X 12". Listen early for Eddie Vedder's (photo) "Hard vedderSun" from the soundtrack to "Into the Wild." You'll also hear from blues legend Keb' Mo' and Jackson Browne from his 1996 CD, "Looking East."

Brilliant fringe artists on this night include Eto, Aim, Azure Ray, and Daniel Cage with "For What Its Worth", not to be confused with Buffalo Springfield's classic. We'll let Keb' Mo' reprise that song with elegance and style.  read more »

birthday

No, that's not me in the picture (although I am feeling a little light-headed).

Since I survived another birthday recently this week's I.W.H. hauls out a bunch of birthday-related tunes, from Louis Jordan's "Happy Birthday Boogie" from the 1940's to Les Claypool's more recent "Long in the Tooth". Plus a special appearance by the Firesign Theatre reading "Chapter Six: In Which Eeyore has a Birthday and Receives Two Presents" from Winnie-the-Pooh.

Plus new (or fairly new) music from Fleet Foxes, John Scofield, Robert Wyatt, Arvo Part and lots more.

Planet Bluegrass Mainstage

Apologies for the last minute blog, but I've just returned from Song School and Folks Fest in Colorado where my mind was blown away from all the awesomeness, and I haven't quite gotten it back yet. In any case, I'm playing a few songs from people I met or saw perform, and there's going to be a whole lot more of that in the next few weeks. Probably some cool interviews too! Stay tuned on Tuesdays from 9-10 am!

The first two days of the festival it rained, thus the umbrellas and ponchos. Still a beautiful setting for a weekend of concerts though, right?

U.S.SENATOR JOSEPH BIDEN OF DELAWARE. Listen to my exclusive interview with Senator Biden who Senator Barack Obama has just chosen as his Vice Presidential running mate in the 2008 Election. I sit down with him for a full half hour and discuss his stance on all major issues. The interview was done a few months ago during the Democratic primary.

ANDREW EDLIN. Andrew is the author and star of 'Churchill' a one-man play about Sir Winston Churchill. The play is in two acts; the first an hour, the second half-an-hour. Churchill agonizes in his wartime bunker below London whether to resign as Prime Minister. As he tries to decide he reviews his uniquely eventful career, filled with history-changing events and people, glorious speeches, pithy comments, funny stories, and all the wit and wisdom that has made Churchill beyond greatness into an imperishable legend.www.churchillplay.com

it’s also been almost a year since our Ethiopian Exodus. remember that? so my African travel companion, Missy Misdemeanor, and I have been rehashing the adventures- with the riddumz.
last year around this time, we were dancing in Mescal Square- in Addis- on the Millennium- while a mini bus blared “Ganja Planter” and we all skanked and raged til’ the wee hours. those were the times.  read more »
