Hawthorne-Castro was formerly a successful television literary agent for Hollywood's Endeavor Agency, representing writers, directors and producers for television and feature films. "Dream Not of Other Worlds" Author on Writers' Voices Oct 19 at 1pm

Monica and Caroline's guest on Writers' Voices this week is Huston Diehl, professor of English at the University of Iowa and author of "Dream Not of Other Worlds: Teaching in a Segregated Elementary School, 1970," published by the University of Iowa Press.

When Huston Diehl began teaching a fourth-grade class in a "Negro" elementary school in rural Louisa County, Virginia, the school's white superintendent assured her that he didn't expect her to teach "those children" anything.

She soon discovered how these low expectations, widely shared by the white community, impeded her students' ability to learn."

University of Iowa Press on Writers' Voices October Fridays, 1 pm and Mondays 8 am

Writers' Voices with Monica and Caroline kicks off a month of interviews with the authors and editors of the University of Iowa Press this week. Listen in Friday October 5 at 1 pm or Monday October 8 at 8 am as Holly Carver, director of Iowa’s only university press (www.uiowapress.org ), discusses how she and her staff choose books for publication.

As Director of the University of Iowa Press, Ms. Carver is responsible for acquisitions and finance for 35-40 titles per year.

In addition to acting as liaison between the Press and university administration, she works closely with in-house colleagues to coordinate all stages of editing, design, production, and marketing for each title. She is also directing the Press' ventures into electronic publishing.
Prior to joining the U of I Press in 1985, Ms. Carver was a manuscript editor at the University of Texas Press in Austin. read more »

Jeffrey Smith on Writers' Voices March 23

Writers' Voices with Monica and Caroline welcomes local writer, speaker, and safe-food activist Jeffrey Smith to KRUU-LP 100.1 FM this Friday, March 23, from 1 to 2 pm. Smith is the author of "Seeds of Deception," the explosive expose of the health dangers of genetically modified (GM) foods, and the forthcoming "Genetic Roulette." He will share his experiences as an investigative reporter, author and world-wide speaker; including his research methods, writing process, and how he integrates his writing and speaking careers. The interview will be rebroadcast Monday morning at 8 am.

Writers' Voices Dec 15

What I've learned so far from hosting Writers' Voices- the most important part of being a radio host is finding the right guests. And so far, I'd say that's my biggest talent. Our guests have been articulate, interesting and enthusiastic, and that makes our job pretty easy. So far, finding talented writers to interview in this community (including a few expatriates) is a breeze. So far, my mother (Caroline Kilbourn) and I have interviewed:

Chrystel Kohl and Paul Merrill on the benefits of a Writers' Group.
Marcy Luikart on attending Writing Conferences and breaking into the literary short fiction market. Cheryl Fusco Johnson on teaching and mentoring children's writers, with a second appearance on the best books on writing.
Nancy Mellon on storytelling as a healing modality.
Julie Stephens and Chris Menkemeyer on the writing of Tom Robbins
Diane Frank on the poetic novel
Carol Klein on editing anthologies and today's show (which you can hear Monday morning at 8 am) -
