jump blues

Good news, Blues KRUUzers!

While stocking up on unlistenable free jazz CDs for Monday afternoon's "Just Plain Jazz" show, I stumbled upon a choice selection of vintage jump blues that will have you and your honey showing off your slick dance moves wherever you happen to be listening.

Joe Liggins and his Honeydrippers (choice stuff), Roy Milton & the Solid Senders (3 CDs worth!), King Perry and his Pied Pipers (never heard of him before, but he cracks me up) and tons more of the tight, swinging, sassy music that paved the way for rhythm'n'blues and rock'n'roll. Get ready to groove to "The Hucklebuck", "Pink Champagne", "I Can't Lose With the Stuff I Use" and even some songs that were too racy for those wide-open times! "I Wonder Who's Boogien' my Woogie?"

Find out Saturday night as we celebrate the feel-good dance music of 50 and 60 years ago!

"Leo Jumps In", "Panama's Jump", "Mel's Jump", "Jitterbug Jump", "Stompin' At The Savoy", "Leilani's Leap", "Hot BeanTiny Grimes Strut" - phew! It tuckers me out just to type a few of the hot platters we'll be spinning! As a musical corrective, we'll also be preparing to "Chill" with some "Green Tea" in "The Bath".

From Leo Parker, Panama Francis and Tiny Grimes & his Rocking Highlanders (!) to the more contemporary sounds of Medeski, Martin & Wood, Joshua Redman and Jacky Terrasson, Just Plain Jazz will be jamming more music into a two-hour slot than physics would seem to allow. If I told you that there's a strong likelihood that you'd also be hearing Wes Montgomery, Mulgrew Miller, Ray Bryant, Paul Motian and even more, well, you'd think that I was a big exaggerator...Tune in this  read more »
