A bill that could save Internet radio has been submitted to Congress. The bill, Internet Radio Equality Act, would stop a new royalty scheme that Internet broadcasters say will shut them down because it will cost them too much money.
U.S. Reps. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) filed the legislation Thursday. The bill reverses a recent decision of the federal Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) to nearly triple the amount of royalties Internet radio broadcasters pay to copyright holders for playing a song.
The Copyright Royalty Board earlier this month approved a rule that would force commercial Internet radio stations, regardless of their size, to pay a new, higher flat fee to the record labels each time a song is played.
SaveNetRadio, which is made up of Net broadcasters, applaud the bill.
Royalty rates for Web-casters—starting retroactively at $0.0008 per song in 2006 will climb to $0.0019 per song in 2010. As it stands now, the rates will go into effect May 15. read more »
Free Speech Battle Over Online Parody of 'Colbert Report'
MoveOn, Brave New Films Sue Viacom For Illegal Takedown of YouTube Video
San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) asked a federal court today to protect the free speech rights of MoveOn.org Civic Action and Brave New Films after their satirical send-up of "The Colbert Report" was removed from YouTube following a baseless copyright
complaint from media giant Viacom.
The video, called "Stop the Falsiness," was created by MoveOn and Brave New Films as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on Colbert's portrayal of the right-wing media and parodying MoveOn's own reputation for earnest political activism. The short film, uploaded to YouTube in
August 2006, includes clips from "The Colbert Report" as well as humorous original interviews about show host Stephen Colbert. In March of this year, Viacom -- the parent company of Comedy Central -- demanded that YouTube take "Stop the Falsiness" down, claiming the
video infringed its copyrights.
"Our clients' video is an act of free speech and a fair use of 'Colbert Report' clips," said EFF Staff Attorney Corynne McSherry. "Viacom knows this -- it's the same kind of fair use that 'The Colbert Report' and 'The Daily Show' rely upon every night as they parody other channels' news coverage." read more »
There are historical events which, when people ask where you were, you instantly remember: the day Titanic came out, the first time you heard The Macarena, the day they aired the last episode of Sienfeld. You know, the important stuff.
Well you'll have to add another moment to the top of that list: a first-ever radio event. A political precedent that's setting the groundwork for generations to come. And all that with The Eye of the Tiger as the soundtrack.
What was this event, you ask? Oh, you weren't there? What?! Ok, here's the low-down.
For about a week the Jefferson County Greenband (and the Happy Hour with Steve McLane) guys have been running a really weird promo on your favorite radio station in the world. No, not KMCD, KRUU, dammit! Anyway, the promo claimed that Mayor Ed Malloy venerable leader of the community of Fairfield, would hand wrassle Mayor Dave Lyon venerable leader of the community of Birmingham. And most people who heard this promo said "yeah, right - ha ha, nice joke". But some of us kept listening all the way to where we could clearly hear The Eye of the Tiger. Which basically means that we were psyched baby, psy-ched!!!
So there it was, all week, anticipation building up. Wondering just how big Mayor Lyon is. Not sure if Lyon was spelled Lion. Worried that Mayor Malloy wasn't eating enough spinach (coz of the arm thing, you know, with Popeye?). Basically no sleep for days. read more »
(Note: This was actually written – and submitted, I might add – on December 1, but didn't get posted, better late than never...)
I am part of Briani Carey's posse for her Tuesday afternoon (5-6 pm) show called “My Darkest Hour,” which features her and Amber Desmond's selections from their favorite screamo/metalcore/post-hardcore bands like Drop Dead, Gorgeous, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and Escape the Fate. During a recent show, we were cruising the internet and discovered that Drop Dead, Gorgeous would be performing on November 30 at the Picador in Iowa City. Springing into action, we were able to secure press passes for the concert and schedule an interview with the band. read more »
